Hrvatske Autoceste is currently carrying out the intensive implementation of the new Crolibertas toll collection system, the largest technological upgrade of the Croatian motorway network to date. While motorway users can already see the installation of new gantries on site, an equally important part of the project is unfolding behind the scenes — the development and testing of advanced software solutions that will enable fully contactless motorway travel.
Installation works on gantries for automatic vehicle recognition are being carried out daily as part of the key infrastructure of the future system. So far, 18 gantries have been installed, with works continuing at a total of 114 locations across motorways A1, A2, A3, A4, A5, A6 and A11. This is a large-scale and logistically demanding project being implemented in phases, in close coordination with traffic management and technical services.
At the same time, software solutions are being developed and tested behind the scenes to connect all elements of the system — from automatic vehicle identification and toll processing to integration with user accounts. Although invisible to users, this segment of the project is essential to ensuring the reliable and secure operation of the Crolibertas system. The combination of advanced roadside infrastructure and sophisticated digital technologies will ultimately enable fully contactless, faster and more user-friendly motorway travel.
Crolibertas represents one of the most significant technological advancements in the modernization of Croatia’s motorway network, with the ongoing works laying the foundation for a new generation of toll collection — faster, more efficient and fully aligned with European standards.
