A total of 53 gantries for the new Crolibertas electronic toll collection system have so far been installed on Croatian motorways. The gantries have been installed on sections of motorways A3, A4, A5 and A11, while installation works continue according to schedule at multiple locations across Croatia.
Although the gantries are the most visible part of the project, a wide range of key activities is taking place behind the scenes to ensure the functionality, security and interoperability of the system. This is one of the most technologically demanding infrastructure projects in the Croatian transport sector.
What Is Being Developed Behind the Visible Works
In addition to gantry installation, activities related to design, permitting and construction are continuously being carried out for all system components, including dedicated lanes and connections to the infrastructure network. At the same time, key technological components are being developed:
- Mobile enforcement units – specialised vehicles for toll collection enforcement
- Dedicated fast-registration lanes – including services for holders of National Disability Identification Cards
- Communications infrastructure – the network connecting gantries and kiosks
- Power supply infrastructure – ensuring reliable electricity supply for all toll collection points
- DSRC readers – for verification of ETC (ENC) devices
- Central system and remote monitoring – management and supervision of the entire Electronic Toll Collection System (ETCS)
- Test environments – verification of functionality prior to deployment
- Web portal and mobile application – user registration and account management
All these components are being integrated into a single, reliable and secure toll collection system.
A System Covering 1,300 Kilometres of Motorways
Crolibertas will be implemented on all motorways operated by Hrvatske Autoceste d.o.o., Bina-Istra d.d. and Autocesta Zagreb–Macelj d.o.o., ensuring a unified and interoperable toll collection system at the national level.before entering the motorway. Toll collection will be carried out through: • ETC (ENC) devices using DSRC technology • Automatic Licence Plate Recognition (ALPR) For heavy vehicles, the use of an ETC device will be mandatory, while other users will be able to choose their preferred toll payment method.
The new system will enable motorway use without stopping, provided that vehicles are registered and linked to a valid payment method before entering the motorway. Toll collection will be carried out through:
- ETC (ENC) devices using DSRC technology
- Automatic Licence Plate Recognition (ALPR)
For heavy vehicles, the use of an ETC device will be mandatory, while other users will be able to choose their preferred toll payment method.
